My comments to some of these things that people actually say

Sorry, our building is not accessible…but we’ll figure out a way to get you in.

Great that you're willing to help. Let's make a list of the obstacles and what adjustments you can make so I can get in next time .

PS: I hope you realize that you are legally obligated to make sure that my disability doesn't mean mean I have no access.

Disability rights

I’m praying for you.

That is kind but what are you praying for exactly? FYI: Getting out of my wheelchair isn't on the top of my list.

Can you have sex?!

Yes and I enjoy it as much as you.

I'm planning on writing a book on the subject and maybe even create a professional erotic movie

I wish I had my own chair sometimes.

No you don't! Think before you speak! Maybe I should break your legs a week or two before your wedding? You really don't want to be confined to a chair permanently.

You’re an inspiration.

Why?

Can I have a go??

No! Would you say that to the pilot flying you to your holiday location?

My wheelchair is mine and it requires knowledge you don't have to operate.

It must be nice not having to go to work.

Sorry?
I work and love my job and how it can contribute in creating a 'better' society. Also, as a people-person I really enjoy my colleagues.

Do you need help?

Maybe... but I will let you know if I do.

But if you think you can help out with one of my pet-projects, give me a shout

Travel tips

I enjoy traveling and seeing a lot more than just my own corner of the world. Going long distances by plane, train or automobile takes a lot of planning and considerations. Not all hotels are accessible and special equipment (e.g. a hoist) is usually not available either. Throughout the years I’ve gained a good deal of experience on the subject.

I’m currently trying to consolidate them in a website so others can benefit from my knowledge.

Accessible Hangouts

Going out for food or drinks is fairly doable when the weather is great and you want to sit outside. But when the weather is not so kind, accessibility becomes an issue. Lots of places have stains without ramps, bathrooms a wheelchair doesn’t fit in or are simply very tightly spaced. That means that finding a nice place to hang out besides the small list of favorites is hard.

Via a review website that focuses on accessibility I want to make that process a bit easier. Via the site I also want to give advice to the owners of the establishments to increase the accessibility

Adapted Clothing

It’s extremely difficult to find clothes that look good on me. The same goes for a lot of people who have a physical disability. There are only a few companies actually produce clothes that have been adapted for people with disabilities. To add to the problem, those companies usually don’t ship globally. Two years ago Tommy Hilfiger started a line of adapted clothing, but it’s still only available in the USA.

I decided to create a “one stop” web shop for adapted clothes and connect it to all manufacturers of adapted clothing I can reach. And perhaps launch my own clothing-line
